Unmet expectations

I am now six weeks into my sugar free lifestyle.  There have been a few bumps, but it has been easier than I expected.  My cravings are fading away, and my appetite has become more predictable. My natural body rhythms are becoming louder and I have been eating less.

The biggest takeaway from the last few weeks is that my mind is not fixated on eating.  During a very busy Saturday a few weeks ago, it was evident when I realized that I had not stopped to snack, or worry about food once. This was not an ordinary Saturday, I helped to move my daughter into a new office. We finished around 2:00 PM and it was only then that I recalled all that I had eaten for the day.  My total calories was about 800 calories, which is quite low based on the physical output.

That evening after a lovely dinner date, my sweetheart and I decided to splurge and split a piece of key lime pie, feeling that I could calorically afford the treat.  This would be my first real sugar in four weeks.  I took the first much anticipated bite, and was pretty disappointed.  The expectation did not measure up to the experience. Isn’t that a great metaphor for life?  Our expectations will almost always fall short of reality!

The lesson of speaking my truth to myself and not having my cravings dictate what to eat and when to eat it has been empowering. There have been times of frustration and uncertainty, but behind it is the fact that I started this to improve my long-term health.

The investments that we make rarely have an immediate payoff and require us to suspend our gratification for the future.  Giving up sugar has provided the inverse of that, I have seen and felt the impact immediately, and am banking of the future dividends. I will continue to document my journey and would love to help you ditch sugar as well.  Reach out for a free consult call to see how we might work together!
